Gerald’s Game is based on King’s novel of the same name, telling the story of a woman left handcuffed to a bed, following a sex game gone wrong. Stephen King adaptations were everywhere in 2017, and some of the best came from Netflix’s batch of original films.

But in doing so, you would’ve missed Sandler in a film which was selected to compete for the 2017 Palme d’Or at Cannes. Told through Ung’s young eyes between the ages of five and nine, the powerful film depicts her and her family’s resilience and devotion to one another in the face of unspeakably tragic events. I‘s review called it “superbly written and brilliantly acted,” and the drama marks out director Dee Rees as a significant talent to watch. Based on the novel of the same name, Mudbound tells the story of two World War II veterans – one white, one black – who return to rural Mississippi, and face racism and PTSD in their own way. Mudbound is Netflix’s prestige offering this year. This film could also be taking home top awards come 2018. This film won the Academy Award for Best Picture for a hot second, before the Oscar was handed to actual winner Moonlight.īut Damien Chazelle’s feel-good romance was the talk of the film world at the start of 2017, showing that musicals can still draw a crowd.
